Bilan Carbone® is a French carbon accounting method allowing an organisation to assess its greenhouse gas emissions and build a reduction pathway.

Created in 2004 by ADEME, it is now maintained by the Association pour la transition Bas Carbone. Version 9 has been in force since 1 January 2025.

Scope

The method covers the three scopes defined by the GHG Protocol. For organisations in the digital sector, scope 3 is almost always dominant: manufacturing equipment weighs more than the electricity it consumes in use.

Version 9

Version 9 structures the approach in seven steps and introduces several changes: measurement of all three scopes becomes mandatory, a transition plan is required rather than recommended, stakeholder involvement is formalised, and the method is offered at three maturity levels.
