Low tech
From Wiki for Sustainable IT
Low tech designates simple, accessible and durable technical solutions, and more broadly an approach that seeks to do better with less.
Three principles
- accessibility: simple, affordable tools that can be widely used ;
- usefulness: focus on essential needs ;
- durability: robust, repairable solutions that consume fewer resources.
Link with resilience
A study published in 2026 by Cigref, the Institute for Sustainable IT and Futuribles presents the low tech approach as an operational lever for the digital resilience of organisations, and calls for shifting from performance through technological power to performance through robustness.
The argument is not a refusal of technology, but the observation that a system one understands is a system one can maintain, repair and replace.
